Why we choose biomimetic dentistry at Grange Road Dental

Dentistry has changed a great deal over the past few decades. For a long time, the standard answer to a badly damaged tooth was to drill it down and cover it with a crown. It worked — but it often meant sacrificing a lot of healthy tooth in the process. At Grange Road Dental, we believe there is a better way, and it shapes much of the restorative care we provide.

Our philosophy: conserve, don't replace

We believe the best dental care is conservative, long-lasting and respectful of your natural teeth. Biomimetic dentistry — which means restoring teeth in a way that copies nature — aligns closely with that philosophy. Rather than removing healthy tooth structure, it focuses on preserving and reinforcing what is already there.

We choose biomimetic techniques because they:

  • Help maintain the natural strength of your teeth
  • Reduce the chance of future breakdown or repeat treatment
  • Promote comfort and long-term oral health
  • Use modern materials that closely resemble natural teeth

Our goal is not simply to fix a tooth today, but to protect it for the future. A biomimetic approach lets us restore teeth in a way that supports long-term health, function and confidence — which is exactly the kind of dentistry we would want for our own families.

Conservative, natural dentistry — preserving and protecting your healthy tooth

What this looks like in practice

This philosophy runs through the restorative treatments we offer. When a tooth has decay or minor damage, we use BioClear fillings — a methodology for building up composite resin that recreates the strength traditional fillings can leave missing, and can sometimes help a tooth avoid needing a crown at all. When more support is needed, a biomimetic crown (bio-crown) conserves the healthy structure rather than drilling it away. And where a tooth needs root canal treatment, we combine it with these same techniques to strengthen and protect the tooth afterwards.

Importantly, a conservative approach also means knowing when a simpler option will do. We will always recommend the least invasive treatment that properly looks after your tooth.

Dr Andrew's special interest in biomimetic dentistry

Our principal dentist, Dr Andrew Zischke, has a particular passion for this field. Dr Andrew graduated from the University of Queensland with first-class honours and has completed a wide range of postgraduate seminars and courses, both in Australia and overseas, throughout his career.

Among his areas of special interest are BioClear fillings and biomimetic crowns — modern, minimally invasive restorative options that reflect everything our practice stands for. With nearly two decades serving the Ipswich community, Dr Andrew has built lasting relationships with local families, and his commitment to conservative, tooth-preserving dentistry is a big part of why patients trust us with their long-term care. You can read more about his background and training on his profile page.
