Affordable teeth whitening that works and is safe to use

One of the most common questions I hear from patients is how to brighten their smile safely and without spending a fortune. Teeth whitening is one of the most straightforward cosmetic treatments we offer, and when done correctly, it can deliver noticeable results while keeping your teeth and gums healthy.

Why do teeth lose their brightness?

Tooth discolouration happens gradually, and there are several reasons your smile may not look as bright as it once did. Everyday food and drinks like coffee, tea, red wine, and berries contain pigments that build up on the enamel over time. Smoking and tobacco use are also well-known contributors.

Age plays a role too. As we get older, the outer enamel layer naturally wears thinner, allowing the yellowish dentine underneath to show through more prominently. Certain medications, particularly some antibiotics taken during childhood, can also cause deeper internal staining that sits within the tooth structure itself.

Over-the-counter products vs professional whitening

Supermarket shelves are full of whitening toothpastes, strips, and kits. While some of these products may produce a mild improvement, they typically contain much lower concentrations of active ingredients compared to professional options. The trays included in generic kits are not shaped to your mouth, which can lead to uneven results or the gel irritating your gums.

Professional whitening uses carefully formulated products at strengths that are only available through a dental practice. Because we assess your oral health first and supervise the process, professional whitening aims to deliver more consistent, safer outcomes. It also means we can tailor the approach to suit your individual needs and sensitivity levels.

Your professional whitening options

At Grange Road Dental, we offer two main approaches to suit different preferences and budgets:

  • Professional strength whitening with ready-to-use trays: These pre-loaded trays are a convenient at-home option. You wear them for a specified period each day over the course of one to two weeks. This is often a more affordable entry point for patients wanting to brighten their smile.
  • Custom-fitted tray whitening: We take impressions of your teeth and create trays that fit precisely. The close fit helps the whitening gel sit evenly against every tooth surface, which may provide a more uniform result. These trays can also be reused for future top-up treatments.

What to expect during treatment

Before starting any whitening, we recommend a dental check-up to make sure your teeth and gums are in good condition. Untreated cavities or gum issues should be addressed first, as whitening gel can cause discomfort if it reaches exposed areas. A professional clean beforehand can also help the whitening gel work more evenly by removing surface stains and plaque.

Most patients notice a visible difference within the first week or two of treatment. The degree of change varies from person to person depending on the type and severity of staining.

Managing sensitivity

Some patients experience temporary tooth sensitivity during whitening. This is quite common and usually settles once treatment is complete. If you are prone to sensitivity, let us know beforehand. We can recommend a gentler treatment schedule or suggest a desensitising toothpaste to use alongside your whitening routine.

How long do results last?

Whitening is not permanent, but with good habits the results can last well. Limiting staining foods and drinks, avoiding tobacco, and maintaining a consistent brushing and flossing routine all help preserve your brighter smile. Many patients choose to do a brief top-up treatment every six to twelve months to maintain their results.
